General – Running Costs & Efficiency

How much does it cost to run a Thornhill Range Cooker?

Running costs depend on fuel type, energy prices, how often you cook, and how much room heating you want from the cooker. Because Thornhill range cookers can be switched on when needed and off when not, many customers find them significantly more economical than traditional always-on range cookers.

As a broad guide, a Thornhill typically costs around £1,000 less per year in fuel than a comparable heat-storage cooker running continuously – though this varies considerably by household and fuel type.

For fuel-specific running cost detail, see the relevant section below.

Why is it difficult to give exact running cost figures?

Every household uses its range cooker differently. Running costs depend on how long the cooker is on each day, how warm you want the kitchen, how often you cook, and the current price of your chosen fuel.

Any single figure given without these variables would be misleading. What we can say is that controllability is the single most important factor in keeping costs down – and that is what Thornhill is designed to provide.

Are Thornhill Range Cookers energy efficient?

Yes. Thornhill range cookers incorporate patented heat exchange technology designed to extract maximum useful heat from whichever fuel is used.

Efficiency is also a function of controllability. A cooker that only runs when you need it uses less energy by definition than one that runs at full temperature around the clock.

Can I control individual ovens and hotplates separately?

Many Thornhill models offer a high degree of individual control, allowing heat to be used precisely where and when it is needed rather than heating the entire cooker for a single task.

On our Wood-Fired Hybrid, Oil-Fired Hybrid and All-Electric models, selected ovens can be independently controlled, allowing you to set different temperatures for different cooking tasks while still enjoying the benefits of cast-iron heat retention and even heat distribution.
On our Wood-Fired Range Cooker the baffle system allows you to divert the hot air straight from the firebox so you can prioritise the ovens or the hotplate, depending on what you are cooking.

On our Electric Range Cooker the ovens and each hotplate are independently controlled, giving complete flexibility of use.
