Electric Range Cookers

Is an electric Thornhill as good as a wood or oil-fired model for cooking?

The cooking quality is the same. The cast-iron body of a Thornhill electric model heats up and holds heat in exactly the same way as any other fuel type, delivering the same all-round radiant heat and graduated oven temperatures.

The practical advantage of electric is simplicity: no chimney, no flue, no fuel delivery and no combustion. The cooker plugs in, heats up quickly and you are cooking. For households where a chimney would be impractical or expensive, the electric model makes a Thornhill genuinely accessible.

How quickly does an electric Thornhill heat up?

Electric Thornhill models are designed for rapid response. The oven reaches cooking temperature significantly faster than traditional heat-storage cookers – typically around 20 minutes from cold to 180°C.

Does an electric Thornhill retain heat after switching off?

Yes. The cast-iron construction continues to radiate warmth after the heating elements have switched off. This residual heat can be used for keeping dishes warm or finishing slow-cooked recipes without drawing additional electricity.

Are electric Thornhill range cookers expensive to run?

Electricity is generally one of the more expensive energy sources per unit of heat, so running costs are typically higher than oil, log wood or wood pellets. The amount of energy required for cooking itself is similar across all fuel types – the difference lies in the cost per kilowatt hour of the fuel.

The controllability of a Thornhill helps mitigate this: you are only using electricity when the cooker is actually on. Using a timer to pre-heat before mealtimes and allowing the cast-iron mass to retain and deliver heat is a practical way to reduce consumption.

If you are on a renewable electricity tariff or have solar panels, running costs can be considerably lower.

Can I run an electric Thornhill on solar panels?

Yes – and a growing number of our electric customers do exactly this. A Thornhill electric model timed to run during peak solar generation hours can operate largely on self-generated electricity, significantly reducing running costs.

Do electric models require a chimney or flue?

No. This is one of the key advantages of the electric model – no chimney, no flue and no external ventilation are required. The electric Thornhill can be positioned wherever a suitable electrical supply can be installed.

A dedicated electrical circuit is required. Your electrician will need to install the appropriate supply – we will advise on the specification during the ordering process.

Does an electric Thornhill heat the room?

Electric Thornhill range cookers provide some ambient warmth to the kitchen from the cast-iron body, particularly when running for extended periods.

However, customers who want significant room heating as well as cooking are likely to find oil, log wood or pellet models better suited to that purpose. The electric model is primarily designed and chosen for its cooking performance and installation simplicity.
