How economical is an oil-fired Thornhill to run?

How does running cost compare with a traditional always-on oil-fired range cooker?
A Thornhill oil-fired range cooker operating on demand – turned on for cooking and heating, switched off when not needed – uses substantially less fuel than a cooker running continuously at full temperature.
The comparison is stark: a traditional heat-storage cooker running 24 hours a day uses the same fuel whether you are cooking Christmas dinner or away on holiday. A Thornhill only uses fuel when you ask it to.
What type of oil does a Thornhill use?
Thornhill oil-fired models run on standard 28-second kerosene – the same fuel used by most domestic oil-fired central heating systems. If you already have an oil tank, you will be able to use the same supply.
Bio-kerosene blends, such as B30K (containing 30% biofuel), are compatible and reduce the carbon footprint of oil heating. These are increasingly available from UK fuel suppliers.
How much carbon dioxide does an oil-fired cooker produce?
Carbon emissions depend on fuel consumption and usage patterns. A controllable Thornhill oil range cooker – used on demand rather than running continuously – will produce significantly lower emissions than a comparable always-on model.
Switching to bio-kerosene blends reduces emissions further.
What is the difference between a balanced flue and a conventional flue?
A conventional flue exhausts combustion gases through a chimney. A balanced flue takes air for combustion from outside the building and exhausts gases through the same unit directly through an external wall – without needing a chimney.
A balanced flue installation is often less expensive than lining a chimney and works well in properties without a suitable chimney or where chimney work would be disruptive. The key requirement is that the cooker must be positioned on or near an external wall.

Can a balanced flue pass through another room?
No. Balanced flues must terminate directly through an external wall in accordance with current UK Building Regulations. They cannot pass through another room or habitable space.
Do I need a chimney for an oil-fired Thornhill?
Not necessarily. Balanced flue models do not require a chimney and are often the simpler, more cost-effective installation in properties without a suitable existing chimney.
If you do have a chimney, a conventional flue model is equally suitable – your installer will advise on whether lining is required.
How noisy is an oil-fired Thornhill?
Oil-fired Thornhill range cookers are very quiet in operation. Most customers describe the sound as a gentle, low background hum when the burner is running. It is unobtrusive in normal kitchen use.
